MONTAGUE – The Fremont boys basketball team edged Montague, 49-42, in a WMC-Lakes match-up on Friday evening.

The Packers started slowly and were outscored 26-20 in the first half and 14-10 in the third quarter. The Packers’ defense buckled down and allowed the Wildcats just two points in the final quarter. Fremont scored 19 and grabbed the victory.

“This was a gutsy effort from our boys tonight because we struggled to find any rhythm offensively for the first three quarters,” said Fremont coach Adam Bowen. “Montague is a very good defensive team, but I thought our defense was very good also.”

Kyler DeKuiper led the Packers with 11 points, four steals and four rebounds. Will DeBlake scored 10 points and snagged three steals.

The Wildcats’ Cole Herremans poured in 15 points and Paul Olson scored eight points. Jack Degen chipped in six points.

“We executed our game plan really well, and because of that, we kept the game close,” said Bowen.

Fremont (8-12, 4-6) will visit Orchard View on Thursday for a league contest.

Montague (11-9, 4-7) travels to Manistee for conference action on Tuesday.
