CUSTER — Mason County Eastern’s girls basketball team defeated Mesick 36-22 Friday night in a West Michigan D League game at Custer.

The Cardinals snapped a two-game losing streak with the win.

“It was a great win for the girls,” said MCE coach Jake Smith. “They played a good defensive game and really worked hard on both ends of the court. The girls were aggressive going to the hoop and we got Mesick into foul trouble the whole night.”

Eastern throttled the Bulldogs in the first quarter, limiting them to just three points and scored 12 to take a nine-point lead. Mesick refused to fold, though, and outscored the Cardinals 8-4 in the second period to trail by five, 16-11, at the half.

Mesick carried that momentum over into the second half, outscoring the Cardinals, 11-10, in the third and cut the Cardinals lead to four, 26-22. Easten then blanked the Bulldogs 10-0 in the fourth period.

Lucy Shoup scored a game-high 13 points to lead the Cardinals while Kennady Tyler tossed in nine.

Eastern is 4-12 overall and improved to 4-8 in the league. The Cardinals travel to Baldwin on Wednesday night.
