MUSKEGON – The Muskegon Community College Lady Jayhawks quickly grabbed control of their game on Saturday and cruised to victory.

The Lady Jayhawks ran off to a double-digit lead in the opening quarter and never looked back in a 74-38 victory over the Kirtland College Firebirds.

The game was played at Bartels-Rode Gymnasium.

The Lady Jayhawks led 16-5 after one quarter and 35-19 at the half. MCC outscored Kirtland 39-19 in the second half.

Bench play was key for the Jayhawks, who received 18 points from their reserve players. Also, MCC turned Kirtland turnovers into 34 points.

“We bounced back with a win today,” said MCC coach Jason Cooper, whose team suffered a road loss at Mid-Michigan on Wednesday. “We didn’t play our best, but we had a few stretches in the game where we put it together.”

Ty’veonna Davis led the way with 20 points, 11 steals, eight rebounds and five assists. Arrionna Williams added 17 points, six rebounds and four steals. Gaby Reeve had 12 points and seven rebounds. Remi Sponseller had nine points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists. Ali Phillips had five assists.

The Jayhawks (14-12, 8-5) hit the road Tuesday to take on North Central College to wrap up the regular season conference play.
