SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central girls basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped Saturday with a 44-31 non-conference home loss to Kent City.

For whatever reason, the Spartans suffered an uncharacteristically poor night shooting from the field. As a result, the Spartans failed to maintain a 23-20 lead midway through the third quarter.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well and made some costly mistakes with the ball,” said Spartans coach Brian Beebe.

Kent City struggled to crack through the pesky Spartan defense, though, and Central trailed only 15-13 after a low-scoring first half.

The Eagles opened the second half with a 10-5 run that gave them the 23-20 lead into the fourth, then pulled away with a 24-8 run in the final quarter.

Central senior Wren Nelson was the leading scorer with 15 points and Mallory Miller contributed 11. But they were the only ones in double figures.

The Spartans are 11-3 overall and will resume West Michigan Conference Rivers Division play Tuesday when they host Ravenna.
