WHITEHALL — Mason County Central junior 120-pounder Hunter Sanford brought home the overall West Michigan Conference Tournament title Friday night in Whitehall, after capturing the regular season Rivers Division championship earlier in the night.

Sanford finished it off with a 6-2 decision over Max Krukowski of Whitehall in the title match. He defeated Kole Thomas of Hart by a pin fall before that to grab the division title.

It’s his third WMC overall title.

As a team, Mason County Central finished sixth in the standings.

“Hunter wrestled real well tonight, and was always in control of his matches,” said Spartans coach Kendel Trim. “He is putting everything together at the right time for the post-season.”

Zane McCabe, a senior, won the Rivers Division title by surviving a battle with Hesperia’s Blake Sayer for a 7-5 decision. But he lost a 5-3 decision to Chris Aebig of Montague in the cross-over championship match.

All-Conference honorable mention went to senior 126-pounder Aiden Hirschfield, junior 144-pounder Colter Kirchner and 175-pound sophomore Parker Overmyer.

Spartan senior Brayden Overmyer finished sixth  at 150 pounds, sophomore 165-pounder Landon Angst and senior 285-pounder Austin Tromp also won matches.

“We wrestled pretty well on the day,” Trim said. “We are continuing to improve. We had a lot of guys hit moves today that they haven’t been able to score with yet this season.

“We just keep pushing to get better.”

Next up for the Spartans is the MHSAA Division 4 team district tournament Wednesday at Hart.
