FREMONT – Caris Nelson helped lead the Newaygo boys’ basketball team to a 66-62 comeback win in the Division 2 district opener against Howard City Tri-County on Monday. 

Nelson poured in 21 points, dished out seven assists and grabbed six rebounds.

The Lions were behind most of the game until late in the fourth quarter when they found a spark and pulled ahead to steal the game.

Blake Kerr threw in 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Logan Klomp scored 17 points. Josiah Long had six rebounds and four assists. 

Newaygo (15-8) will face Grant at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinal round of district play at Fremont.
