SHELBY – Playing without a starter and dealing with foul trouble all night, Holton’s girls basketball team found a way to get by Shelby on the road, 32-26.

The Red Devils’ starting center Ryann Robins was the one most affected by fouls, leading to an early exit in the fourth quarter. Robins, one of Holton’s bigs, is typically her team’s most effective rebounder. Without her, other players had to step up.

Kenzie Greene answered the bell, pulling down 10 rebounds while Layla Canady came up with nine points and seven rebounds. Abbie Fowler also played a balanced game, scoring six points and adding five assists and five steals.

“We played a great defensive game and outside of two stretches where Shelby went on a little run, we were able to hold them at bay for most of the night,” Holton coach Robert Jordan said. “Tough game but more than happy to get out of there with a win given the circumstances we faced.”

Holton (12-5, 5-4 WMC Rivers) will prepare for another game on the road as they take on Grant on Tuesday.

Shelby (5-10, 3-7 WMC Rivers) will face non-conference opponent Fremont on Monday.
