CUSTER — A strong first half powered the Mason County Eastern girls’ basketball team to a 54-35 victory over Walkerville in a Division 4 district quarterfinal Monday night.

The game was played at Mason County Eastern.

Eastern controlled the game after taking a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinals had a 17-5 advantage in the second and entered the halftime break with a 33-12 lead.

Walkerville regrouped and played a much better second half and outscored the Cardinals 12-9 in the third quarter, but still trailed, 42-24. Eastern had a 12-11 edge in the final period.

Lucy Shoup led three players in double figures for the Cardinals with 15 points. Kennady Tyler contributed 13 and Brailyn Johnson chipped in with 10.

Maria Rodriguez scored 10 points to lead the Wildcats, followed by Heaven Rodriguez with nine.

Eastern (8-15) will play Brethren, another West Michigan D League foe, at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the district semifinal.

Walkerville finished 2-21.
