NEWAYGO – The Newaygo girls’ basketball season ended in disappointment as a strong second half helped Sparta pull away from the Lions 40-31 in Division 2 districts on Monday.

The Lions trailed 14-13 at halftime until Sparta went on a 16-10 third-quarter run to take a 30-23 lead heading into the fourth.

The Lions were led by Maria Riddering with nine points, five rebounds and four steals, while Ruby Hughes added eight points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

Addison Goodin pulled down 10 rebounds.

“The last game of the season is always a tough one,” said Newaygo coach Nate Thomasma.  “I thought the girls played hard tonight and with great energy.  We just had a tough start to the second half and couldn’t quite dig ourselves out of the hole.”

The Lions finish 12-11.
