MANISTEE — Senior forward Jayna Edmondson scored a pair of goals, and junior goalkeeper Piper Eskridge had another big night in net Monday as the Manistee girls’ soccer team picked up its first win of the season, 4-3, against Orchard View at Mariner Field.

It was a West Michigan Conference game.

All four of the Mariners games this season have been decided by only one or two goals, but the pattern changed some Monday night when they stunned the Cardinals for a 2-0 lead after the first 26 minutes.

The first goal was off the foot of Macaela Bruce, successfully converting a cross, while Edmondson controlled a pass from Kate Somsel for the second.

Orchard View came back to tie it, 2-all by the half, and then scored quickly in the second half to bound into a 3-2 lead.

Manistee, however, didn’t flinch and scored twice more, Somsel putting one in off a direct free kick from Laurea Eix. Edmondson scored the game winner.

“Offensively, our movement was really good tonight. We found some really good gaps and had some really good runs. The girls answered the call. They worked hard, and they hustled.” said Manistee coach Kathy Smith.

“We talked a lot at halftime about limiting their corner kicks, because they were getting really nice corner kick placement, scoring one of their goals off a corner kick. And I think we didn’t allow another kick the rest of the game. We made some adjustments to win some balls, rather than be in support of the ball.”

Manistee next hosts Fremont in a conference contest against Fremont.
