MUSKEGON – It’s always a good day when you can beat your closest rival in any sport.

On Saturday, the Muskegon Community College Jayhawk softball team did just that with a doubleheader sweep over Grand Rapids Community College. The Jayhawks won the opener 8-4 and the nightcap  17-2.

In the opener, Willo Staal led the way with two doubles. She knocked in two runs. Illeana Hatcher smacked a home run and finished with three RBI. Winning pitcher Brooklyn Galdeen hit a home run and knocked in two runs. On the mound, she allowed four runs on six hits and had five strikeouts in the complete-game victory.

The Jayhawks brought out the big bats in the nightcap with plenty of extra base power.

Galdeen had three hits, including a home run, and three RBI. Rachel Romero had two hits, including a home run and a double, and knocked in four runs.  Andrea Romero had three hits, including two doubles, and scored three times. Olive Staal had three hits, scored three runs and knocked in two runs. Willo Staal had three hits (two doubles), scored three runs in plated a pair of runs.

Hatcher had two hits, including a double, knocked in two runs and scored twice. Aldred had a hit and scored three runs.

Aldred earned the win for the Jayhawks on the mound. She gave up two runs on three hits in five innings of work. She had four strikeouts.

Jayhawks (16-8) plays at Grand Rapids Community College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday.
