HART – The Hart Pirates won the first game and the Ravenna Bulldogs won the nightcap in West Michigan Conference baseball action on Wednesday.

In a pair of tight games, Hart won the opener 4-3 and Ravenna won 5-3.

Hart opened the scoring in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Ty Schlukebir. In the fourth inning, Tyler VanderZanden plated a run with a single. In the fifth, Blake Weirich led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Schlukebir.

Ravenna responded with two runs in the sixth to pull to within 3-2.

Hart added a run in the sixth when Mitchell Slade led off with a double to left, but his pinch runner was thrown out on the bases. Later in the inning, Halen Boos hit an RBI single that plated Brendan Hiddema, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.

Ravenna threatened in the seventh and did score one run, but that was it in the one-run game. Weirich was the winning pitcher with 5.2 innings of work. He had 14 strikeouts. Avery Guikema was credited with the save with 1.1 innings of work.

In the nightcap, Ravenna scored four first-inning run to take an early lead.
 
Hart was able to pull to within a run with three runs in the fourth inning. Ravenna added a run in the sixth.
 
Schlukebir took the loss on the mound for Hart.
 
Hart (13-13, 6-6) will host Pine River in a single game next Wednesday to cap off the regular season.
