MONTAGUE – The Montague girls’ basketball team caught fire offensively in the second half to collect a 47-34 win over Whitehall.
It tool some time for both teams to get going, but the Wildcats scored 20 points in each of the the third and fourth quarters to knock off the rival Vikings. Montague (3-0 overall, 1-0 WMC-Lakes) had three players score in double-figures, led by Braylyn Bultema with 13 points.
Addison Pranger added 11 points, and Amanda Cederquist had 10 points for the Wildcats—which coach Jess DeBruin noted was key in the league victory.
“We just started playing our basketball. (In the) first half I think our nerves got to us. You could tell in the first half that Whitehall wanted it more, but in the second half we wanted it more,” DeBruin said. “Amanda Cederquist, she had an awesome game. Addison (Pranger) and Braylen (Bultema) have been our leading scorers the last few games and we’ve been waiting for that. Waiting for her to come out of her shell. She was all over the boards and had an excellent basketball game.”
After trailing 9-7 at the break, the Wildcats re-grouped in the locker room to come roaring back in the second half. Pranger was the go-to player with eight points in the third quarter to open up a 27-18 Montague lead.
Lexi Daggett scored 11 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to keep the Vikings (1-2 overall, 0-1 WMC-Lakes) in the game, but Bultema had nine last-stanza points to hold back the opponents and seal the win for the Wildcats.
Montague closes out its 2024 schedule on Friday at Fremont.
Whitehall will visit South Haven on Monday before hosting Ludington on Thursday.
