MESICK — In a low scoring affair Thursday night, the Mason County Eastern girls basketball team fell just short against the Mesick Bulldogs, 27-23 in Mesick.
The Cardinals found themselves in a 17-9 hole after the first 16 minutes, being outscored 6-3 in the first period and then 11-6 in the second.
Each team scored four points in a slow moving third period, and the Cardinals were looking at a 21-13 deficit heading into the final stanza. Eastern finished with a 12-6 run in the final eight minutes, but it wasn’t enough.
Kennady Tyler led all scorers in the game with 13 points for the Cardinals, and she also ripped down 13 rebounds for a double-double.
Lucy Shoup had a monster game on the glass, gathering in 18 rebounds. She also blocked two shots and dished out three assists.
“The girls really stepped up in the second half and played great defense,” said Eastern coach Jake Smith. “They had a chance to tie the game with a three that was just off, and then had to foul and send Mesick to the line. I got great contributions from everyone tonight. A hard fought battle. We just feel a little short.”
Eastern fell to 1-5 overall, 1-3 in the WMD, and will next see action on the whyen its hosts Baldwin in another league game Tuesday.
