The Muskegon Community College women’s basketball team moved up to third place in the Western Conference standings after defeating Lake Michigan College Friday, 77-72.

The Jayhawk win is now their fifth straight after a six-game losing streak placed them at the bottom of the conference. Their overall record improves to 13-7 and their conference record is now 6-3.

“At this point I could not be more proud of our team,” said MCC head coach Rob Recknagel on the turnaround“We fought through a tough stretch by staying together and working hard to improve our weaknesses. We are playing strong, team basketball, the sky is the limit going forward.”

The Jayhawks led 38-29 at the half and never looked back.

MCC’s leading scorer on the night was Abby Rodriguez who scored 18 points on six three point field goals.

Morgan Giddings had 14 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.

“Morgan plays with enough intensity and heart to deserve 40 minutes, she is our sparkplug on both sides of the ball,” said coach Recknagel.

The bench contributed immensely as they outscored LMC 26-12. Mackayla McDonald had 12 of those points, while Kaylie Caverty and Katie McKinnon each scored six points.

The Jayhawks take on ninth ranked Kalamazoo Valley Community College this upcoming Wednesday.
