The West Michigan Whitecaps picked up a road victory on Monday night, defeating Great Lakes 5-1.

The Whitecaps scored three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth while only allowing a run in the sixth.

In the fifth inning, John Valente brought home Reece Hampton on a sacrifice fly before Ulrich Bojarski and Jordan Pearce each hit solo home runs.

In the sixth inning, Hampton hit a sacrifice fly to score Christopher Proctor before John Valente brought home Wenceel Perez on an RBI single.

Hampton led the Whitecaps offense with two hits and RBI while Valente had one hit and two RBIs.

Reliever Drew Crosby picked up the win, allowing one run on five hits while also striking out three batters over three innings of work.

With the victory, West Michigan improves to 7-9 overall on the season and is three and a half games behind first place Lake County in the Midwest League Eastern Division standings.

The Whitecaps will continue their series with Great Lakes at 6:05 p.m. on Tuesday.
