The Muskegon Big Reds put a stomping on the defending Division 2 champions on Friday, beating Warren De La Salle 41-7 in their season opener at Wayne State University.

Cameron Martinez started the Big Red attack, punching in a one-yard rushing touchdown on fourth and one with 8:13 left in the first quarter.

De La Salle responded with a Brett Stanley 19-yard touchdown run with 8:43 remaining in the second quarter to make the score 7-7.

Then Martinez broke loose in the second quarter, with touchdown runs of 2 and 62 -yards to give Muskegon a 21-7 halftime lead.

The lone third quarter score came from Japrie Henderson, whose 10-yard run gave Muskegon a 28-7 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Muskegon’s Tarran Walker punched in a 3-yard touchdown run and Tommy Watts scored from six yards out.

Martinez paced the Big Reds with 184 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, while also throwing for 57 yards on 6-for-11 passing.

Myles Walton had an interception to lead the Big Red defense.

The Big Reds will travel next Friday to play Detroit Martin Luther King.
