The Fruitport Trojans dug themselves into just too deep of a hole in their 29-22 loss to host Coopersville in Friday night’s O-K Blue opener for both teams.
Falling behind 14-0 in the opening moments of the first quarter, Fruitport quickly knew it had to get to work.
Colin Jolman responded for Fruitport with a 66-yard touchdown run and quarterback Gavin Reems completed the 2-point conversion to get the Trojans on the board and back into the game.
But after back-to-back Coopersville touchdowns, the Trojans trailed 22-8 and had a three-touchdown deficit to climb back from.
Senior Aiden Vela helped the Fruitport comeback effort with a 17-yard scoring run before halftime, putting his Trojans within two TDs, 29-14 at the break.
Vela answered again in the third quarter with a seven-yard TD scamper to put the Trojans within a touchdown of Coopersville.
But that was as close as Fruitport could get as neither team managed to score in the fourth.
The Trojans now fall to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the O-K Blue and host Spring Lake next week.
