FERNDALE — Ludington fell into a 11-point hole in the first quarter and could never dig out of it, finishing with a 58-42 loss to Ann Arbor Skyline in the boys basketball portion for the Motor City Roundball Classic tournament at Ferndale on Wednesday afternoon.

The Orioles trailed, 22-11 at the end of the first quarter and was unable to cut into the deficit in the second quarter, and in fact saw two points added to it when they were outscored, 10-8 in the second and went into the half with a 32-19 deficit.

It was even worse in the third quarter when the Orioles were outscored, 14-7 and saw their deficit balloon to 20 points, 46-26 heading into the fourth period. Ludington cut it down to 11 at one points in the last quarter, but could get no closer.

“Skyline dominated the offensive glass,” Ludington head coach Thad Shank said. “Their second chance opportunities were the difference in the game.”

Peyton LaCombe led the Orioles with 15 points and nine rebounds, while David Schillinger added 13 points.

The Orioles were scheduled to play a second game in the Roundball Classic this afternoon.
