FREMONT–In their last game before the holiday break, the Fremont girls basketball team struggled mightly as they fell to the Sparta Spartans on Tuesday evening falling 53-9.

As the game started Haley Zerlaut had the Packers looking good as her opening drive to the basket gave them two points plus a free throw to go up 3-0 to start the game.

Unfortunately, that would be the first and last time the Packers would score in the first half as Sparta ran away racking up a 39-3 lead going into the break. It was a sloppy first half for the Packers as they were out rebounded 18-7 and turned the ball over 17 times.

We expected Sparta to come out in a physical and aggressive fashion, but we did not handle it well,” said Fremont head coach Wes Zerlaut. “They were aggressive on both ends of the floor and we didn’t match their intensity, neither mentally or physically.”

The Packers tightened up defensively to slow down the Spartans but they still struggled offensively in the second half to chip away at the lead. Sparta went on to outscore Fremont 14-6 in the final half of the game.

We all need to do a better job, coaches and players alike,” said Zerlaut.

Haley Zerlaut led Fremont with four points while Jessica Bennett had three points and Mia Witte added two points.

Fremont falls to 1-5 and will be back on the court Friday January 7th when they host Newaygo in CSAA Gold action.
