SHELBY — The lead changed hands three times, and the score was tied four times Tuesday night when the Shelby boys basketball team hosted Ravenna in a West Michigan Conference game.

Despite outscoring the visitors, 18-10 in the third quarter, the Tigers couldn’t get enough of a push to overtake the Bulldogs, who pulled off a 57-48 win.

Ravenna built a 14-point lead at one point, while the Tigers had a three-point lead but could not hold it.

The Bulldogs had the lead at the end of the first quarter, 14-12. Ravenna continued the onslaught, outscoring the Tigers 21-11 in the second as they mounted a 35-23 lead at the half.

Shelby made a run to get back in the game with that 18-10 third quarter to shave its deficit to four points, 45-41 going into the fourth period. The Bulldogs outscored the Tigers, 12-7 in the fourth for the final nine-point margin.

Grant Becklin led the Ravenna scoring attack with 21 points while dishing out three assists. Kyle Beebe tossed in 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Joseph Hayes had 18 points to lead the Tigers. Mason Garcia scored 15 and Bishop Lee added 13. Hayes also had 12 rebounds and four assists and three steals. Lee added seven rebounds.

The Tigers dropped to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference with the loss. Shelby is next scheduled to host Whitehall in another conference game on Friday.

Ravenna improved to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference with its second straight win. The Bulldogs are next scheduled to play Friday night when they travel to Montague in another conference contest.
