SCOTTVILLE — Rebounding from a tough loss to Ludington in their arch rivalry just the night before, Mason County Central’s girls basketball team took command from the start and defeated Orchard View, 61-12 in another non-conference game Wednesday night at home.

The Spartans used both offense and a suffocating defense to good effect, outscoring the Cardinals, 17-6 in the first quarter. They never looked back, going up 39-8 at the half with a 22-2 second quarter.

Central outscored the Cardinals, 13-4 in the third period and rolled into the fourth quarter with a 52-12 lead. The Spartans pitched a shutout in the fourth, outscoring the Cardinals, 9-0.

Wren Nelson scored 22 points for the victorious Spartans, and she also hauled down eight rebounds. Charlie Banks tossed in 12 points and dished out six assists.

Mason County Central raised its season record to 6-3 overall, and are at home again for its next game Tuesday, Jan. 25 against Hart in the West Michigan Conference.

Orchard View saw its record drop to 1-8 overall. The Cardinals are scheduled to play at home Friday against Manistee.
