MONTAGUE — After a slow start, the Montague girls basketball team picked up steam and rolled to an easy 51-29 victory Monday night over Manistee in a non-conference home game.

The Wildcats gained an 8-7 edge over the visiting Chippewas in the first quarter, but then exploded for a 19-6 advantage in the second quarter and entered the halftime break with a substantial 27-13 lead.

Manistee outscored the Wildcats, 10-6 in the third period which cut Montague’s lead to 10 points, 33-23 at the end of the quarter. But the Wildcats finished the Chippewas off with an 18-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Haylee Schwarz led the Wildcats in scoring with 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and picked off four steals. Kendall Osborne also had a nice game with 13 points, five rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

Emma Dyer contributed 10 points, four rebounds and three steals. Claire Meacham added eight points and five rebounds.

Montague improved its record to 14-3 overall with its seventh straight win. The Wildcats are next scheduled to see action Thursday night at home against Hart in the West Michigan Conference.
