RAVENNA — Extending its winning streak to five in a row, the Mason County Central girls basketball team defeated Ravenna, 43-33 on the road Monday night in the West Michigan Conference.

But the Bulldogs were the ones who started out strong, forging a slight 8-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

That woke up the Spartans, however, and they rebounded to outscore the Bulldogs, 11-9 in the second quarter and knotted the score at 17-17 at the half.

Continuing that momentum into the second half, the Spartans emerged from the third period with a 15-10 advantage and went into the fourth period with a five-point lead, 32-27. The two teams scored 11 points apiece in the final quarter.

“On Friday we played Ravenna at home, and it seemed like they were pretty flat up there (Scottville),” Spartans head coach Mike Weinert said.

“We turned around and came back here tonight, and we kind of started out flat. We played good defense, but we changed how we came out on them last game and they hit some shots off of it.

“But, we did a really good job. Jayden Peterson and Charlie Banks did a really good job defensively on Emma Gillard and held her to four points. They made it really hard on her.”

Wren Nelson paced the Spartans with 20 points and nine rebounds in another solid performance. Grace Weinert tallied nine points, dished out four assists and had three steals, while Adria Quigley finished with seven points and three assists.

Ravenna was led in scoring by Madeline Kilbourne with 16 points, including three 3-point baskets in four attempts. No one else had more than four points.

The Spartans improved their record to 11-5 overall and 8-4 in the conference. Mason County Central is next scheduled to travel to Onekama for a non-conference game on Tuesday night.

Ravenna fell to 4-12 overall and 2-9 in the conference with its third straight loss. The Bulldogs are next scheduled to see action Tuesday night hosting Holton.
