GRAND RAPIDS–Despite faltering in the second quarter the Mona Shores boys basketball team earned a solid 47-41 O-K Green Conference win over Grand Rapids Union on Friday night.

The Sailors started with the advantage taking a slight 13-11 lead in the first quarter.

By the second quarter, however, the Sailors lost the wind in their sails as they struggled to make plays on either side of the ball. Falling on the short end of an 11-2 scoring run the Sailors found themselves trailing 22-15 at halftime.

Using the break to regroup, the Sailors tightened up defensively allowing the opportunity for points in transition to rally back with a 15-7 run over the Red Hawks to snag back the lead at the end of the third quarter by a score of 30-29.

The Sailors continued to contain the Red Hawks in the fourth quarter and stayed aggressive on the attack and put up 17 more points to Grand Rapids Union’s 12 to seize the win.

Contributing almost half of the teams scoring was Parker Swartz who had a stellar game coming one rebound shy of a double-double on the night racking up 21 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Keontae Richards chipped in with 13 points for the Sailors.

The defense was a key part of the Sailors battling back with Demetri Roberson playing a crucial role by holding one of the top players in the league to only six points.

Mona Shores improves to 7-7 and 4-4 in the conference. The Sailors will continue O-K Green Conference action on Tuesday when they host Zeeland West.
