FREMONT–It has been a turnaround season for the Fremont Packers’ football team in 2022.

And one of the big reasons for the vast improvement has been the play of senior Michael Romero.

For his efforts, Romero has been chosen the Local Sports Journal Defensive Player of the Month in October.

Michael has been a huge contributor on the Packers squad for the past three seasons. He has been a two-way player, leading the defense as a linebacker and the offense as a tight end.

During the 2022 regular season, (through 8 games) Romero leads the Packers with 55.5 tackles (40 solo, 31 assists), five tackles for loss, one sack, one fumble recovery, two interceptions, one blocked punt and he has scored a defensive touchdown.

“Michael has been the backbone of our defense from the start of the summer training,” said first-year Fremont coach Jared Hudson.

“His leadership at the linebacker-tight end positions are invaluable to our team’s success and the growth of the football program within the community,” Hudson said.

Romero is the son of Mario Romero and Jodi Slinkard. Romero has a 3.9 grade-point-average.
