NORTON SHORES–A solid season for Mona Shores’ Victor Powell earned him one of two Local Sports Journal player of the month honors in tennis.

Powell, a junior, completed his third season on the Sailors varsity squad. To cap the season, the Sailors earned a spot in the MHSAA state finals.

This season Powell went 20-6 and was a GMAA and conference champion along with being  a runner-up at the regionals.

“Victor is an outstanding student athlete,” Mona Shores coach Traci Hackney said. “He has a calm maturity about him and works hard in all that he does.”

His skill and tenacity were definitely assets that he provided to this year’s team.

“He has a fierce forehand and his movement around the tennis court is exceptional,” Hackney said. “Victor has a quiet confidence about him and is a great teammate and friend. Victor is very coachable and has improved tremendously over the course of the last 3 years.”

Powell comes from a family that plays tennis. And, Powell hits the court during the off-season.

“Victor is a great asset to our team and I can not wait to see what he does his senior year,” Hackney said

Victor is the son of Tim and Lorlei Powell. He has a 4.07 grade-point-average.
