SHELBY — Fremont’s girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday night when the Packers defeated Shelby, 58-30 in a West Michigan Conference crossover game.

The visiting Packers led, 14-6, after the first quarter and then exploded for 21 points in the second to take a 31-13 lead into the half. It was 47-23 after three quarters.

Jessica Bennett led a balanced Fremont offensive attack with 12 points. Mia Clemence added nine, Khaila Noordyk eight and Lily VandenBerg seven.

“We really got good effort again tonight,” said Fremont coach Wes Zerlaut. “The difference was that the ball went in the basket more consistently tonight. We got some good results from our pressure defense in the second quarter to open up the score a bit, and the girls got into the flow of the game. We got great contributions from a lot of different sources.”

Shelby was led by Molli Schultz with 20 points. Kendall Kaveri contributed six.

Fremont (1-2) will have another non-conference game Friday night at Grand Rapids West Ottawa.

Shelby (1-2) will resume action in the West Michigan Conference Rivers Division on Friday night at Ravenna.
