CUSTER — Mason County Eastern’s girls basketball team rebounded from a loss earlier this week with a resounding 45-12 victory over visiting Walkerville.

Friday’s game was a West Michigan D League matchup.

“We were able to create some turnovers early, which led to some quick sets and had good shot selection,” said Eastern coach Jake Smith. “The girls shot the ball well from the line tonight and rebounded really well. I was pleased with their defensive intensity tonight.”
Eastern started fast, outscoring the Wildcats, 18-2, in the first quarter and never looked back. An 11-3 advantage in the second led to a 29-5 halftime lead.
The Cardinals outscored the Wildcats, 6-4, in the third quarter and took a 35-9 lead into the fourth period.
Maria Gomez-Jimenez led the Cardinals in scoring with nine points, while Olivia Wing and Lucy Shoup added eight apiece. Deanna Codman and Janessa Alvesteffer had seven each. Shoup hauled down 11 rebounds to lead the Cardinals. Gomez-Jimenez pulled down eight while Alvesteffer grabbed seven.
