FRUITPORT — The host Fruitport Trojans brought their defense and high energy into their Division 2 district opener against Montague on Monday night.

That combination led the Trojans to a 48-35 victory and a spot in Wednesday’s district semifinal game against Whitehall.

“Tonight was about our defense and energy as a team, and it got us through the game, even as some good looks did not fall,” said Fruitport coach Steve Erny, whose team placed three players in double figures for scoring.

Grade Anspach led the way with 12 points, four rebounds and three steals. DayDay Williams had 10 points and two steals while Andrew Spyke had 10 points and four rebounds.

“Grade really stepped up tonight,” Erny said. “He hit some big shots that we needed and played a solid game overall. DayDay Williams also picked up some of the slack tonight and had a great game.”

Collin Jolman was lauded for his aggressiveness on the defensive end.

Owen Raeth and Cortland Schneider led Montague with seven points each. Rodney Brassfield had 10 rebounds and Isaiah Atchison had nine.

Fruitport came out strong and led 17-8 after one quarter and 28-16 at the half. The Trojans took a 36-22 advantage into the final quarter.

Montague finishes the season a 12-11 record.
