SPRING LAKE – Reid Grimmer scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter and lifted the Spring Lakers to a narrow 20-19 victory over Coopersville on Friday night.

It was Grimmer’s second touchdown of the game. Earlier, he scored on another 1-yard run.

Coopersville took a 6-0 lead in the opening quarter, but Spring Lake back on a 3-yard touchdown run by Wren Dephouse. Jessica Stewart’s extra point gave the visitors a 7-6 lead.

The Broncos scored again to go up 13-7, but again, the Lakers answered. Grimmer ran it in from a yard out and Stewart added the PAT and the Lakers led 14-13.

The Broncos scored again in the second quarter and took a 19-14 lead into halftime.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Lakers punched in what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed and the Lakers had the narrow one-point victory.

Sam Schafer led the Lakers’ ground attack with 19 carries for 149 yards. Dephouse added 60 yards on nine carries and Grimmer rushed 15 times for 54 yards.  The Lakers rushed for 285 yards and passed for 27.

Owen Smies was a standout on defense with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Spring Lake (4-0) travels to Grand Rapids West Catholic next week.
