The Spartans, however, were resilient and answered the bell in the second half. Senior center Wren Nelson scored a game-high 24 points, 12 in each half. MCC who also got 17 points from junior guard Mallory Miller. Eva Hradel added nine points, while Grace Weinert and Jessica Peterson each scored 6.

“We made a lot of great plays down the stretch in the second half,” said Spartan coach Brian Beebe. “I’m really proud of the kids for answering the bell. A ton of credit to Manistee – McCarthy and Edmondson did a great job getting to their spots and scoring in transition against us. We were able to keep the pedal down offensively in the second half and made the plays necessary to win an opener.”

Nelson and Miller each grabbed a game-high nine boards for MCC, which hosts Holton in a WMC Rivers Division game on Thursday.
