PENTWATER — Playing their third game of the week, the Pentwater Falcons girls basketball team had some tired legs when they hosted Marion in the West Michigan D League Thursday night.

But the Falcons persevered, surviving their exhaustion to squeak out a tight 30-28 victory and now can spend the weekend recovering physically.

The two teams finished the first quarter tied, 6-6, but the Falcons broke through for a 12-9 edge in the second that gave them a 18-15 lead at the half.

Marion turned the tables on the Falcons in the third, however, outscoring them, 11-5, and carried a 26-23 lead. Pentwater won the fourth period, 7-2.

“We had some offensive struggles, and without Charlie Swanger’s eight points in the first half, we could have been in trouble,” said Pentwater coach Joe Gorton. “But while we struggled offensively, defensively we were really strong right out of the gate. We held Marion’s offense down all game long, and that helped cover up our offensive miscues.”

Swanger finished the game with 13 points to lead Pentwater. Ajorie Adams and Sam Schaefer had six apiece.

Marion was led by Maddy Bell with 17.

Pentwater (3-1, 2-1 WMD) is off now until Thursday, Jan. 4 when the Falcons travel to Grand Rapids for a non-league game with Grand Rapids Wellspring Prep.
