SHELBY – Without Kendall Zaverl to accompany her, Molli Schultz took on the majority of the scoring for Shelby girls basketball in a 47-13 win over Manistee Catholic Central on Tuesday.

The entire offense stalled out for Shelby in the first half as they managed just four points in the first quarter and had a 16-4 lead heading into halftime. Defense was key for the Tigers as they pressed the Sabers and forced them into turnover after turnover.

A clear spark ignited the Tigers’ offense in the third quarter as the baskets came in bunches. Schultz was the key contributor, putting up 12 of her 23 points on the board in that frame. She finished with four steals. Shelby senior Biloxi Lee was the next highest scoring Tiger with six points. She had six rebounds. Zaverl did not play in Tuesday night’s game. Bailey Dickman chipped in with six points for Shelby and both Brylee Friedman and Terri Woodbury each pulled down five rebounds.

“I was proud of how hard my girls played tonight,” said Shelby coach Sarah Wolting. “We were crashing the boards hard and playing in your face defense.”

Manistee Catholic Central was led by sophomore Regan Leiffers who had seven points. Senior Elizabeth Logan had three points on the night while Rianna Leiffers had two.

Shelby (1-0) will start their season on a short homestand with conference opponent Ravenna coming to town on Thursday.
