MONTAGUE — David Shillinger broke the all-time scoring record at Ludington on a 3-point bomb in the fourth quarter as the Orioles pulled away from Montague for a 68-53 victory.
Tuesday’s game was played in the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division.
Shillinger reached 1,337 points for his career with that triple, breaking the previous scoring record held by Mike Larsen, another Oriole big man who set the mark in 1972. That bucket was three points of the 34 he scored in the game.
But it took a 26-12 third quarter for the Orioles to finally put away Montague, which kept on Ludington’s heels throughout the first half.
Ludington opened the game with a 17-13 advantage in the first period, but then the Wildcats came back with a 12-11 edge in the second to make it a 28-25 difference at the break.
Montague bounced back after the third quarter outburst by the Orioles for a 16-11 fourth quarter, but the third period was the game-breaker.
Spencer Holmes followed Shillinger with 12 points and Cameron Gunsell added 10 for the Orioles.
For Montague, it was Isiah Atchinson scoring 21 points and Braden Raeth 17.
Ludington improved to 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in the conference. The Orioles are next scheduled to play in the Lake Michigan Cup at Grand Haven starting against Traverse City West next Thursday night.
Montague fell to 4-3 on the season, and 1-3 in the conference. The Wildcats host Mason County Central on Thursday night.
