FLINT – The Muskegon Community college wrestling team is sending five wrestlers to the nationals after their performances over the weekend.

As a team, MCC finished eighth with 58 points in the NJCAA Great Lakes District. The event was at Mott Community College in Flint.

Triton College (Ill.) finished on top of the team standings with 183 points.

Leading the Jayhawks was sophomore Rice Robins, who finished third at 174 pounds. He is now a two-time NJCAA national qualifier.

Four other Jayhawks heading to nationals include sophomore Parker Holt, who was fifth at 165 pounds, freshman Caleb O’Neal, who was fifth at 285 pounds, Joe Perez (133) and Hunter Leonard (184) both finished sixth and earned wild card berths.

“I”m extremely proud of this team,” said MCC coach Cody Carpenter. “It hasn’t been the easiest season and they have toughed it out, worked extremely hard and made the best 133 and made the best of it.”
Two other Jayhawks – Ryan Reno and Riley Wentworth – both fell just shy of qualifying for the nationals.

National will be at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa on March 1-2.
