BEAR LAKE — The Mason County Eastern girls basketball team overcame an early deficit and knocked off host Bear Lake, 37-21, in the West Michigan D League Wednesday night.

Eastern trailed the Lakers, 10-9 at the first quarter stop, but gained a 9-4 advantage in the second period and went into the halftime break with an 18-14 lead.

The Cardinals pitched a shutout, 10-0 in the third quarter and zoomed to a 14-point lead, 28-14 then cruised the rest of the way for the win.

“I was proud of the girls’ effort tonight,” Eastern coach Jake Smith said. “They played a complete game and were rewarded for their efforts.”

Lucy Shoup hit a hot streak in the second half, scoring 13 points and totaled a game-high 21 for the Cardinals. She also cleared 12 rebounds for a double-double, and picked off five steals.

Kennady Tyler contributed seven points and Braylin Johnson added six for the Cardinals.

Eastern improved to 3-10 overall and 3-6 in the WMD. The Cardinals – who have won two in a row now – travel to Big Rapids Crossroads Academy for a league game Friday night.
