NEWAYGO – The Newaygo girls basketball team used a strong defensive effort to take down Holton, 33-21, on Tuesday evening.

“The girls played defense with some intensity tonight,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma. “We rotated well and tried to make it difficult for Holton to get good looks.”

The Lions led 12-9 at halftime then outscored the Red Devils 16-9 in the third quarter to stretch the lead.

Naomi Schillman led the way for Newaygo with nine points and three assists. Addison Goodin scored seven points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Kija Shultz added seven points, five rebounds and three steals.

“We don’t have one superstar player, but when the girls play complementary basketball like we have the past few games, we can be a tough out,” Thomasma said. “Holton is well coached and has some experience so beating them tonight was a great win.”

Newaygo (7-7, 2-5) will travel to Howard City Tri-County on Friday for a CSAA matchup.

Holton (11-5, 4-4) will see WMC-Rivers play as it travels to Shelby on Friday.
