SHELBY — Mason County Central’s boys basketball team traveled to Shelby for a West Michigan Conference Rivers Division game Tuesday night and came away with a 63-53 victory.

It snapped a two-game losing streak for the Spartans.

The Spartans were outscored by the Tigers 24-8 in the first quarter, but stormed back with a 20-8 second period to close the deficit to 32-28 at the half. They took a 51-45 lead after three.

“Our bench really stepped up tonight,” said Spartan coach Chris VanderHaag. “That was good to see this time of the season. This was a good team effort and win.”

Cole VanderHaag led all scorers with 27 points for the Spartans with six 3-pointers. Braylin Thurow finished with 14.

Shelby was led by Phillip Hayes with 16 points.

The Spartans improved to 9-12 overall and 6-5 in the conference and will host Hart in the regular-season finale Thursday night in the WMC.

Shelby dropped to 3-17 overall, 1-10 in the conference. The Tigers host Holton Thursday in a conference matchup.
