GRANDVILLE – Western Michigan Christian ran into red-hot NorthPointe Christian senior Jamari Hughes in the Division 3 boys basketball district opener on Monday.

Hughes caught fire with 29 first-half points and led the Mustangs to a 64-35 win over WMC.

Finishing with a game-high 33 points, Hughes did his damage with seven 3-pointers in the first two quarters of action.

WMC trailed throughout the game, starting at a 2-2 tie early in the first quarter.

Eli Malek’s 12 points for the Warriors was the game’s only other player in double figures.

Jonas Dutton scored eight points for the Warriors and Ben Moorhead finished with six points.

NorthPointe’s Colton Vander Ark scored nine points while Bryce Bird and Patrick Janson each scored six.

The Mustangs move on to Wednesday’s district semifinal where it faces host Grandville Calvin Christian, which defeated Potter’s House 68-66 in overtime on Monday.
