GAYLORD — Defense was the name of the game on Thursday night in the Division 2 regional final game between the Ludington Orioles and the Kingsford Flivvers.

Both teams displayed stingy defenses, but it was the Flivvers who hoisted the trophy at the end with a 37-34 victory over the Orioles.

After falling behind the Flivvers 11-10 at the end of the first quarter, the Orioles went ahead 22-19 at the half thanks to a bucket at the buzzer.

The difference was the third quarter when the Flivvers outscored the Orioles 13-6 and gained a 32-28 lead. They were able to successfully survive a Ludington rally in the fourth period.

Ludington came storming back in the final quarter to pull even at 34 with 2 minutes left. But a steal and basket by Gavin Trevillian with 45 seconds remaining gave the Flivvers the lead for good.

David Shillinger led the Orioles with 12 points in his final game wearing the Black and Orange, while Cameron Gunsell contributed seven.

The Orioles finished the season with a 19-7 record. Kingsford bumped its record to 21-4 as it moves on to the quarterfinals next week.
