MANTON — The Mason County Central girls came up short on Friday night in a Division 3 district title game against host Manton.

Manton is moving on to the regionals after posting a 39-28 victory over the Spartans.

The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Spartans and concluded their season 19-5.

It wasn’t until the midpoint of the opening quarter before the Spartans scored their first basket, that coming from senior Gracie Weinert to make it 7-2.

Unfortunately, the Spartans weren’t able to recover from that early deficit.

The Spartans fell into a 14-point hole, 18-4 after one, and while their defense stepped up in the second, they still trailed 21-10 at the half.

Central outscored the Rangers 9-8 in the third quarter to make it a 29-19. Manton then finished with a 10-9 edge in the fourth period.

“It’s tough to play this far away from home,” Spartan coach Brian Beebe said. “We battled and I can’t fault the level of effort we had.

“We are going to miss all seven seniors. They were part of 38 wins in the last two years. There is nothing to hang their heads about, and that is a credit to the seniors.”

Mallory Miller led the Spartans in scoring with 16 points and Riley Mast added five.

The Spartans were without senior Wren Nelson, who couldn’t go because of a knee injury. She finished her high school career with nearly 1,000 points.
