MANISTEE — Leland broke a scoreless tie 24 minutes into the second half, added a second goal with just over a minute left and escaped with a 2-0 non-conference win over Manistee Friday night.

The game was played at Mariner Field.

“I feel like our defense made them (the Comets) work for everything,” Manistee coach Kathy Smith said. “We did a good job of covering. Hats off to Piper and her saves.

“Our wings (Alayna Edmondson and Lidnsey Gardner) did a good job of getting wide. We did have a couple shots. I think most of it was probably more in our zone.”

Returning junior goalkeeper Piper Eskridge had 15 saves, including the rejection of a penalty kick and several diving stops.

Manistee travels to Ravenna for its first West Michigan Conference game on Wednesday.
