SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central split its opening West Michigan Conference Rivers Division doubleheader with Shelby on Tuesday at home, winning the first game 4-3 and dropping the second 7-4.

Owen Shimel was the winning pitcher in the opener. giving up three runs on four hits and four walks while ringing up 11 strikeouts.

Both teams had five hits.

Peyton Merz and Drake McKay paced the Spartans with two apiece. McKay drove in two runs and Merz one.

The Spartans were held to just three hits in the nightcap, one apiece by Braylin Thurow, Shimel and Colton Sanders. Bladzik and Sanders each had a run batted in.
