The Mona Shores boys’ lacrosse team has been on a roll of late and that continued on Tuesday night with a 7-6 overtime victory over Zeeland.

After an 0-3 start, the Sailors find themselves at 3-4 overall, 2-1 in the conference.

“We played pretty well in the first half with long and patient offensive possessions, but continue to struggle with finishing,” said Sailor coach Murle Greer. “These missed opportunities are keeping us from opening up games and gaining comfortable leads.  It also allows our opponents to stay within striking distance which came back to haunt us later in the game.”

Once again, when the offense struggles, the defense shines for Mona Shores.

“The defense was outstanding, causing turnovers and only allowing three shots on cage in the first,” said Greer. “We had a 4-0 lead going into half, but Zeeland scored two quick goals in the third.”

Zeeland tied the game with 4 minutes remaining to force overtime.

Micah Carefelle won a big faceoff to gain possession. Shores ran a solid set of offense and worked the ball around well until it got to Ezra Carefelle, who dodged a defender and found the back of the net for the gamem winner.

“It’s great to know that we have the fortitude to win close games,” Greer said. “We had Zeeland on the ropes and they never stopped coming at us.  They kept the pressure on us and capitalized off our many mistakes.”

Ezra Carefelle finished with four goals and one assist. Sophomore Cullen Conrad added three goals.
