Muskegon Heights topped Muskegon Catholic in a 43-38 nail biter on Friday in a Lakes 8 boys basketball matchup.
The two teams battled through 10 lead changes in the second half and MCC nearly came through with a game-tying shot in the waning moments of the contest.
The Tigers trailed 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and battled back to tie MCC, 18-18 at half.
MCC’s Jaden Johnson knocked in a pair of free throws late in the fourth quarter to take a 38-37 lead but the Tigers later retook the lead with less than 30 seconds to play.
Muskegon Catholic got a quality look for the tie and couldn’t capitalize as it fall just short.
Jaden Johnson tallied another double-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals. Dane Rutz had seven points and seven rebounds as well.
Muskegon Catholic drops to 3-4 in Lakes 8 Conference play and 4-9 overall. Muskegon Heights improves to 8-5 and 5-2 in Lakes 8 play. The Crusaders and Tigers will rematch on Tuesday at Muskegon Catholic.
