REED CITY — Fremont’s girls basketball team tuned up for next week’s district tournament with a 44-34 road victory Friday night over Reed City in the Central State Activities Association-Gold.

It was the Packers’ second consecutive win, and sends them into the post-season with some momentum.

The Packers jumped out to a 13-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, and outscored the Coyotes, 11-10 in the second to build a 24-12 halftime lead.

Reed City came back to outscore the Packers, 9-7 in the third period, but the Packers maintained a 10-point lead, 31-21 going into the fourth quarter.

Haley Zerlaut paced the Packers with 17 points, dished out five assists and picked off five steals. Kaitlyn Bennett added six points and had five steals, and played good post defense.

Christina Malackanich led the Coyotes with 13 points while Kyleigh Weck added eight.

“We shared the ball well on offense, and really worked hard on the defensive end,” said Fremont coach Wes Zerlaut.

Fremont concluded the regular season with a 4-16 record overall and 4-10 in the conference. The Packers now prepare to open the district tournament Monday night at Comstock Park against the host school at 7 p.m.
