LAKEVIEW — The Holton Red Devils overcame some adversity on Tuesday night in a 46-39 victory overk Lakeview in the Division 3 district opener for both teams.

The game was postponed on Monday night due to inclement weather.

Holton has little time to prepare for Wednesday’s game against Kent City.

On Tuesday night, the Red Devils suffered a setback when point guard Abbie Fowler tweaked her back in the first minute of the game and was done for the remainder of the half. Fowler’s injury had an immediate adverse effect on the Red Devils as they fell behind, 11-2.

Lakeview went into halftime with a 23-19 lead. The second half was a different story as the Red Devils clawed their way back.

“Their coach has done a great job getting them to compete,” Holton coach Robert Jordan said. “They are young and scrappy.”

Ryann Robins led Holton with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Laya Cannady, who iced the game from the free-throw line, added 15 points. Aubrey Govings had seven points and 10 rebounds.

“Ryann Robins came up big especially in the second half,” Jordan said. “And Aubrey Govings’ energy all night was a real difference for us. She kept a ton of plays alive with her activity. Several girls stepped up and gave us good minutes.

“I’m really happy with the way we found a way through the adversity we faced tonight.”
