FRUITPORT – The Fruitport Calvary Christian boys’ basketball team earned its third win in just three days against a pesky Kent City squad on Friday, edging the Eagles 67-62.

“I give our kids incredible credit for battling this one out on very tired legs, but what a great week,” said Calvary coach Brad Richards.

The action started hot and fast-paced as both teams went into the halftime break tied at 32 points. Both teams battled back-and-forth and Calvary found themselves down by four points with six minutes to play.

Along with critical defensive adjustments in the second half, Calvary put together a run of 22 points and some crucial free throws down the stretch to pull ahead for the victory.

“We gave the game ball to coach Jim Warren for making the defensive adjustment at halftime, we just couldn’t stop Aaron Vanderwest and had to do something different,” he added.

Bradley Richards had yet another hot night with a double-double of 36 points and 18 rebounds. Quinn Swanson followed with 16 points and five assists, while Sam Zelenka threw in 11 rebounds, 10 assists and nine points.

Also, Zach McFarren pulled down eight rebounds.

Kent City’s Vanderwest had 20 points, including 18 in the first half. Jake Perry posted 15 points.

Fruitport Calvary Christian (4-0) will travel to Pentwater on Monday.

Kent City (1-2, 0-1 CSAA) will be at home on Tuesday against Hopkins.
