TRAVERSE CITY — An extended layoff because of the weather kept the Ludington girls basketball team idle for 11 days before the Orioles finally resumed game action Friday night.

Perhaps the result was to be expected as the Orioles certainly appeared a bit rusty and lost 54-30 to the host Traverse City Central Lady Trojans.

“It was good to be playing,” said Orioles coach Warren Stowe. “It’s been over a week and a half since we’ve played, and we’ve only had a handful of practices. Traverse City got out to a big lead, and then it was just uphill from there. I think the positives of playing a program like Traverse City (a Division 1 school) outweigh playing a lesser opponent.”

Ludington was put in catchup mode by the Trojans right off the bat as the Orioles found themselves trailing 15-4 after the first quarter.

But the Orioles responded in positive fashion with a 13-6 second period and sliced the margin down to four points 21-17 at the half.

The momentum didn’t last, however, as the Orioles were outscored 13-8 in the third quarter and started the fourth period with a 34-25 deficit.

No Oriole scored in double figures. Jennah Skiba and Elianna Jeruzal were the leaders for Ludington with seven points apiece while Madelyn Kenyon added five.

Ludington fell to 6-5 on the season and is next scheduled to play Fremont in the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division Tuesday night.
